this closed the gap between temporarily and permanently IMO and helps eg. for channels which are sometimes overloaded by chatty guys.

This sounds like a useful quality-of-life feature, especially for busy channels with a lot of chatter. Automatically hiding activity until the user is highlighted could make it much easier to focus on relevant messages without leaving the channel.
